A wonderful recent addition to our shelves is the line of beautiful sea-theme note cards created by Sanibel resident Pam Kirby Rambo. If you were in our store last Christmas you may remember her best-selling “Shellebrate the Season” Christmas cards, each adorned with a glittery shell (“Visions of SCALLOP SHELLS danced in their heads…”). Her newly released note cards—16 different designs—not only have adorable illustrations of sea life creatures, but each one has a whimsical and interesting fun fact to go along with it. Did you know a sand dollar breathes through its feet? Or that a roseate spoonbill gets pinker by eating shrimp? They come in boxes of eight cards of four designs each.
You can order  these items by emailing MacIntoshBooks@gmail.com. We will happily ship them to you.
Summer Lingers
Summer reading is year-round on Sanibel, but especially nice as Labor Day rolls around and you can relax in the Gulf breeze with a wonderful book.
We’re hosting two book signings in August.
Aug. 16 Carla Brooks Johnston, former mayor of Sanibel, has written Raising Myself, a memoir about her teenage years. Orphaned at 13 and growing up under difficult circumstances, she relates the gripping, inspirational story of her young life.

Aug. 20 Film buff Andrew Schanie brings his extensive Hollywood knowledge to bear in Movie Confidential, a book about “sex, scandal, murder and mayhem in the film industry.” From mysterious deaths to mistakes in filmmaking and a multitude of other sordid tales, this book dishes the dirt on the stars of past and present.

Another fine recent addition to our shelves is the line of beautiful sea-theme note cards created by Sanibel resident Pam Kirby Rambo. Spring Finally Arrives

After an abnormally cold and wet winter (great reading weather!), perfect spring conditions (great beach-reading weather!) have arrived in Southwest Florida. We are enjoying our wonderful wrap-around porch in our new location, where we have hosted several book-signings and often find customers enjoying their new purchases in our comfy Adirondack chairs.

Two wonderful new children’s books are now available: Helen Ketteman’s Swamp Song ($17.99) is charmingly illustrated and lyrically written for young children. “Down in the swamp where the cypress grows, old man gator starts tapping his toes…” begins Swamp Song.

Jane Kirschner-Tuccillo’s Annabelle from Sanibel ($12.95) grew out of the author’s fond memories of visiting the Island Bake Shop on Sanibel in the 1950s and tasting her first-ever piece of key lime pie there. She has included her secret recipe for the pie in her story.

Local favorite Christine Lemmon has a new hardcover gift book called Whisper from the Ocean ($16.00), which is a compilation of favorite passages from her three lovely novels. She will be appearing at MacIntosh Books in June.

Finally, favorite son Charles LeBuff has a new book called Wildlife Barons: The Legendary Piper Brothers and Their Wonder Gardens. The book will have its world premiere at MacIntosh Books on April 21, 2:00 p.m. when Charles will be on hand to sign books and talk about these live-on-the-edge brothers.
All of these books are welcome additions to the shelves at MacIntosh Books & Paper. You can order these books by emailing  MacIntoshBooks@gmail.com. We will happily ship them to you.

Our new location

We are happily settling into our wonderful new space (2407 Periwinkle Way), which we moved into in early December. The reaction to our new location has been positive across the board—better visibility, better light, better parking, better display space. We love our new wrap-around porch, perfect for relaxing with a book or meeting authors while enjoying the Sanibel sunshine. We are planning a celebration of the move soon. Stay tuned for details. And we hope to see you soon in the new shop.

The Move

MacIntosh Books and Paper made the short move next door with the aid of shopping carts, borrowed from local Bailey's market.

Big-name authors on Sanibel

The Sanibel Public Library recently hosted Jodi Picoult and Clive Cussler. Both delivered highly entertaining presentations, then graciously signed books afterward. We have a number of those signed books for sale in our new shop.

Big news

MacIntosh Books and Paper is moving! We are relocating to a beautiful new space at 2407 Periwinkle Way—immediately next door to where we are now (in the direction of Bailey’s). The new shop fronts right along the bike path on Periwinkle. It has wonderful big windows and a spacious wrap-around porch that will be great for relaxing with a book or meeting authors while enjoying the Sanibel sunshine. We are very excited about this move. Hope to see you soon in the new shop.

Gearing up for the holidays

Once again we have our wonderful selection of cards for the holiday season, including some beautifully clever new ones from Kirby Rambo Collections. These shell-themed cards are produced on Sanibel and feature lovely drawings adorned with witty sayings (“Visions of SCALLOP SHELLS danced in their heads!” Happy HanukCONCH!”) You won’t find these cards just anywhere—they are unique. We also have a great selection of holiday cards from Crane, William Arthur, the Museum of Modern Art, and the ever-popular Crane Creek, among many others.

The Help

The Help by Kathryn Stockett has recently skyrocketed in popularity, pushed along by fast-flowing positive word of mouth. We are predicting this will be another reading phenomenon like The Secret Life of Bees was a few years ago. We are lucky enough to have received several signed copies of The Help. Come in and get yours today.

Never too early for Christmas?
Local artist Pam Kirby Rambo has designed some beautifully clever Christmas and Hanukah cards featuring Sanibel’s wonderful seashells adorned with witty greetings (“We KING’S CROWNS of Orient are.” “Happy HanukCONCH!”). They come in boxes of eight cards for $14.99. These are going to be oh-so-popular, so get yours early. The season will be upon us before you can say “WHELK the halls with boughs of holly!”

SIBA.
We just attended the annual conference of the Southern Independent Booksellers Association in Greenville, SC, and were introduced to many southern authors and their latest books, such as Jill McCorkle’s Going Away Shoes, Pete Dexter’s Spooner, Padgett Powell’s The Interrogative Mood, and Robert Hicks’s A Separate Country. The South is nothing if not rich with a tradition of good stories and the fascinating authors who tell them. And come check out all the signed copies we brought back.

The shelves at MacIntosh Books and Paper are starting to fill with new merchandise for the new season. We will have some nice new gifts and stationery, 2010 calendars, local artist wares, and of course the full panoply of new books. Come take a breather, look around our comfy store, and relax for a little while.

Dan Brown’s long-awaited follow-up to The DaVinci Code arrived September 15! As expected, it takes place in DC and involves the mysteries of Freemasonry. Like his previous books, it is engrossing from page 1.

Senator Edward Kennedy’s memoir, rushed into publication shortly after his death, has also debuted this month. Written in the last year or his life, with his instructions not to publish until after he died, this is a personal and touching look at both the good and the bad of this very public figure.

MacIntosh Books was honored to provide the books at author Chris Brogan’s appearance in Fort Myers in September. Considered a rock star in social media circles, Brogan has written Trust Agents, a New York Times bestseller, about harnessing the Internet—particularly social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter—to develop successful businesses. He is a charming and entertaining speaker who offers plenty of good advice about using these new tools in business.
